Affordable web design in the UK should not mean a template with your logo dropped in. Instead, we build fixed-price websites for UK small businesses: £149 for a one-page site, £639 for a seven-page WordPress site and £2,299 for an online store. Starter and Growth sites then go live in 7 to 14 working days, and you own every part of what we build.
- £149fixed price in pounds, to start
- 7–14working days to launch
- 100%refund if we miss the date
- £0monthly fees to us, ever
So what does a website cost in the UK? A 2026 roundup of UK rates by Whito puts a five-page brochure site at £1,500 to £3,000 from a freelancer and £3,000 to £5,000 from an agency. A custom site of 15 pages or more then runs £5,000 to £15,000. For a sole trader or a café, those numbers are hard to justify, which is why so many end up paying a website builder every month instead.
We are a different kind of option, and we would rather say so plainly. In fact, Affordable Web Design Agency is a small team in Chur, Switzerland, one hour ahead of the UK, working remotely with clients in Switzerland, the UK and the US. We do not have a UK office, so we will not pretend to. What we do have is a fixed price list in pounds, a launch date in writing, and a full refund if we miss it.

Plan my storeHow Our Prices Compare With UK Web Design Rates
What a small business website costs in the UK
Typical UK rates in 2026 compared with our fixed prices, in pounds
However, hosting is not included in any package. You buy it in your own name, so you stay in control, and we set the site up on it. For the full comparison, including revisions and extra languages, see our website design packages. If you are weighing the seven-page option, our guide to WordPress website design explains exactly what it buys.
Which package fits your UK business?
Answer three quick questions. Then we will recommend one package, show the price in pounds and explain why.
We add no VAT for UK clients. Prices exclude the 4% payment fee, and you buy hosting in your own name.
What Good UK Web Design Does for a Small Business
Many of your customers will meet your website on a phone, often while they are trying to solve a specific problem. A template built for nobody in particular misses most of what follows, so these are the five things we build into a UK site:
- Speed on a weak signal. We build pages from real text and compressed images, so the main content can load within Google’s 2.5-second “good” mark on a phone. After all, a customer on a train out of Waterloo is the real test, not office Wi-Fi.
- One-thumb contact. The phone number becomes a button within thumb reach, while forms ask only for what you need. Nobody with a broken boiler fills in a ten-field form.
- Town-level local SEO. Your pages name the towns and areas you actually cover, and structured data tells Google the same thing in its own language. That matters far more than ranking for “UK” as a whole.
- Real text instead of PDFs. Menus, price lists and opening hours go on the page as text, so Google can read them and screen readers can too.
- The legal basics, built in. A privacy notice, a cookie banner and, for limited companies, the company details UK law asks for. The tabs further down list what applies to you.
Test your current site the way your customers load it
When you type your website address, we will open Google’s free PageSpeed Insights test for it in a new tab. Then look at the mobile score: Google rates anything under 50 as poor.
Affordable Web Design UK Examples: Three Businesses, Three Builds
These are concepts rather than results from past clients: they show how we would scope three typical UK businesses. Each one also shows which package fits, which pages to build and what makes the site work in its market.
A heating engineer in south Manchester
A heating engineer needs calls rather than compliments on the design. So we would build the Growth package with seven pages: home, boiler repair, landlord gas safety checks, emergency plumbing, an areas page for Didsbury, Chorlton, Salford and Stockport, about, and contact. On phones, a call button also stays fixed at the bottom of the screen.
By law, anyone working on gas must be on the Gas Safe Register, so the registration number sits near the top of every page, where customers can check it. Our guide to web design for plumbers also goes into more detail.
Seven pages give each service and the area page its own chance to rank, unlike a single page. If the budget is tight, the Starter page with one strong call button is a sensible first step.

An independent café in Bristol
A café lives on footfall, so its site has one job: answer “is it open, where is it, and what do they serve?” in a few seconds. We would build the Starter page with opening hours at the top and the menu as real text rather than a PDF. Then come a map, real photos of the shop and a clear line telling customers how to get allergen information.
Food businesses must be able to tell customers which of the 14 major allergens a dish contains, so the site points people to that information instead of hiding it. Our restaurant website design guide goes further.
Because a plain HTML page needs very little hosting, it can even run on the 10 MB of free web space that comes with a domain registered at Infomaniak (affiliate link). After launch, the running cost is then little more than the domain.

A high-street solicitors’ firm in London
A client choosing a solicitor wants clear fees and named people rather than a photo of a gavel. So we would build the Growth package with practice-area pages, solicitor biographies, and a price and service page for each service the regulator lists.
Since December 2018, the SRA’s transparency rules have required firms to publish prices for set services such as residential conveyancing and probate. Since November 2019, every firm website has also had to show the SRA’s clickable logo, known as the digital badge. See also our page on web design for law firms.
For a firm, trust comes from specifics such as named solicitors, published fees and plain English. So none of that needs a £10,000 build, only a clear brief and honest content.

Websites We Have Built for Small Businesses
Our portfolio is mostly Swiss and international, and we would rather show it as it is than invent UK case studies. Each site solves a problem a UK business will recognise, so open any of them and judge the work for yourself.

Affordable web design in the UK only stays affordable if the site does not land you in trouble later. So pick your type of business to see what applies, and what we build in from day one.
Privacy, cookies and the ICO fee
If your site collects names, emails or enquiries, UK GDPR expects a privacy notice that says what you collect and why. Many businesses that handle personal data must also pay the ICO data protection fee, which has been £52 a year for the smallest organisations since February 2025. The ICO’s online check tells you whether you are exempt.
Cookie rules then changed on 5 February 2026. From that date, the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 lets you run analytics used only to improve your own site, and remember settings such as language, without consent. However, visitors still need clear information and a simple way to object, and advertising cookies still need consent. Fines can now reach £17.5 million or 4% of worldwide turnover, so every package includes a privacy policy page and a cookie banner set up for the cookies your site actually uses.
Company details on your website
If you trade as a limited company, your website must show your registered company name and your company number. It must also show the part of the UK where the company is registered, for example England and Wales, and your registered office address. These rules come from the Company, Limited Liability Partnership and Business (Names and Trading Disclosures) Regulations 2015.
Most sites put these details in the footer, so they appear on every page. We therefore add them there as standard, together with a contact page that gives a real address.
Gas Safe and trade credentials
By law, gas work in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. As a result, a heating engineer’s site should show the registration number near the top, where customers can check it on the Gas Safe Register.
For other trades, the same logic applies to the schemes you actually belong to, such as NICEIC for electricians. Only list memberships you hold, and link each badge to the scheme’s own register, because a badge nobody can check does little for trust.
Allergen information on your site
Food businesses must give information on the 14 major allergens for every item that contains them. In a café, a clearly visible notice telling customers to ask staff is allowed, as long as the information is ready when they do.
Online orders work differently, though. If customers order food through your site, the allergen information must be available before they complete the purchase and again when the food arrives. So on ordering sites, we put it next to each dish instead of on a separate page.
SRA price and service information
Since 6 December 2018, SRA-regulated firms have had to publish price and service information for set services, including residential conveyancing, probate and employment tribunal claims for unfair or wrongful dismissal. In addition, every firm must publish its complaints procedure, including how to complain to the Legal Ombudsman.
The SRA’s clickable logo, called the digital badge in its rules, has also been mandatory on firm websites since 25 November 2019. So we build the price pages, put the complaints procedure in the footer and embed the badge with the code the SRA provides.
This is general information, not legal advice. If you are unsure what applies to your business, check with your accountant, solicitor or trade body.
What Affordable Web Design in the UK Costs Over Three Years
A website builder looks cheaper on day one, which is exactly why so many UK sole traders choose one. The catch is that the monthly fee never stops. Here is the comparison in pounds, using the UK prices Wix and Squarespace listed in August 2026.
Three years of a simple website, in pounds
Builder plan fees over 36 months compared with our one-off Starter price
To be fair to the builders, that fee also buys hosting and an editor, and for someone who enjoys tinkering, that is worth something. Still, after three years our £149 page plus a domain costs well under half of either Core plan. And because the files are yours, you can move the page to any host you like. Growth is a different case, though: it is not the cheapest route over three years, nor should it be, since you are paying for seven pages written, built and set up for search. For everything a builder adds on top of the plan fee, see our three-year breakdown of website builder costs.
Accessible Web Design and the UK Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers. The duty is also anticipatory, so you must think ahead about all potential disabled customers, not only the ones you already know. The Act does not name websites or set a technical standard. Even so, your website is part of how you serve customers, and WCAG 2.2 AA, the standard UK public sector sites must meet, is the sensible benchmark for a private business too.
What helps is boring and structural. Use real text instead of text in images, and give every meaningful image a description. Also add enough contrast between text and background, label every form field, and make sure the site works with a keyboard alone. An accessibility widget on top of the page does not fix the barriers underneath it.

Affordable Web Design UK FAQ
How much does affordable web design in the UK cost?
With us, £149 for a one-page site, £639 for a seven-page WordPress site and £2,299 for an online store, all fixed. For comparison, a 2026 roundup of UK rates puts a five-page brochure site at £1,500 to £3,000 from a freelancer and £3,000 to £5,000 from an agency.
Is £149 web design good enough for a UK business?
For a sole trader, a café or a new business that needs one credible page, yes. It is a hand-coded page with five sections, written around the searches your customers use. However, if you offer several services or cover several towns, Growth is the better fit, because each page can rank on its own.
Do you charge VAT on web design for UK clients?
No. We are based in Switzerland, so we add no VAT to invoices for UK clients. If your business is VAT-registered, though, ask your accountant whether you need to account for the reverse charge on services bought from abroad.
Can I pay in pounds?
Yes. Prices are fixed in pounds, and you pay by PayPal or bank transfer. A 4% payment fee applies to every payment.
Do you have a UK office?
No. We are a small team in Chur, Switzerland, one hour ahead of the UK all year round. Instead, we work by email and video call, and you get the launch date in writing before you pay.
Will my website follow UK rules on privacy and cookies?
Every package includes a privacy policy page and a cookie banner, and for limited companies we add the company details UK law requires. We are not lawyers, however, so if you work in a regulated field, check the details with your regulator or trade body.
Who owns the website when it is finished?
You do. You buy the domain and hosting in your own name, and at launch you get every login, the files and the content. So there is nothing to cancel and no monthly fee to us.
